Diagnostic strategy in gestational diabetes could address limitations of standard methodology

Investigators have explored whether continuous glucose monitoring could help identify patients with gestational diabetes.

In a narrative review published in BMC Medicine, the investigators used the PubMed database to assess observational and randomized controlled trials focused on the use of continuous glucose monitoring to diagnose gestational diabetes. They identified the need for alternative diagnostic options because of the lower levels of adherence to standard oral glucose tolerance tests and increasing rates of gestational diabetes.

The investigators suggested that continuous glucose monitoring using glucometrics associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes and the need for pharmacotherapy could provide effective gestational diabetes diagnoses. However, there is a lack of data supporting the standalone use of continuous glucose monitoring to predict gestational diabetes.

The investigators emphasized the need for large, randomized controlled clinical trials to establish diagnostic thresholds and determine whether continuous glucose monitoring could serve as a diagnostic strategy in this patient population and in early pregnancy.
