Diet could offer IBS relief

...

A study explored whether the Mediterranean diet could be considered for first-line therapy in patients with irritable bowel syndrome.

In the study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, researchers randomly assigned 139 participants with IBS to follow either the Mediterranean diet or traditional dietary advice.

Compared with the participants in the traditional dietary advice group, those in the Mediterranean diet group were more likely to achieve clinical response and reduce IBS symptom severity. There were no statistically significant differences in somatic symptoms and quality of life between the groups.

The results demonstrated that the Mediterranean diet could provide benefit in the management of IBS.
