Diets could reduce risk of chronic diseases

Diets aimed at improving gastrointestinal health may help prevent inflammation and the development of chronic diseases.

Investigators outlined key nutritional components of maintaining a diverse and balanced gut microbiome, including fiber, prebiotics and probiotics, according to a news article from U.S. News & World Report. High-fiber foods known to boost the gut microbiome are fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes as well as fermented foods. Diets such as the Mediterranean, vegan, flexitarian, MIND and DASH diets may have the ability to protect against metabolic, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurologic and immune-related diseases. 

The report further stressed that individuals should avoid processed foods, added sugars and unhealthy fats, which can harm beneficial bacteria and promote the proliferation of harmful bacteria.
