Diets may support brain health

Dietary patterns could protect against brain aging.

In a comprehensive review published in U.S. News & World Report, investigators examined which dietary patterns and practices could reduce the risk of cognitive decline and neurologic disorders.

They found that the MIND and Mediterranean diets were the most effective at preserving brain health. The investigators indicated that individuals should consume antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables that delay brain aging, leafy greens containing folate, healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids to support memory and whole grains that supply glucose to the brain — while avoiding ultraprocessed foods and sugar-sweetened beverages.

The investigators concluded that these dietary patterns could offer the greatest long-term protection from cognitive decline.
