Digital health strategies may help in fight against noncommunicable diseases

Investing in digital health interventions could help improve the burden of noncommunicable diseases

Noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases and cancer account for about 75% of deaths across the world, according to a report from the World Health Organization and the International Telecommunication Union.

Increasing access to and implementation of these digital interventions — including telemedicine, mobile messaging and chatbots — may reduce the noncommunicable disease-related mortality rate by more than 2 million and the acute events-related hospitalization rate by 7 million globally. Digital resources can help identify each patient’s modifiable risk factors, minimize the barriers to specialized care and guide patients to healthier lifestyle habits.

The WHO called upon policymakers to provide the resources needed to strengthen digital health interventions and the health and technology sectors to collaborate to develop a robust digital public infrastructure.
