Do patients with cardiovascular disease face psychiatric risks?

Cardiovascular disease-related hospitalizations may be associated with an increased risk of psychiatric disorders.

In a study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, investigators used data from the UK Biobank to examine the outcomes of 63,923 patients hospitalized with primary cardiovascular disease and 127,845 matched individuals.

The investigators discovered that the risk of psychiatric disorders was higher among the patients hospitalized with cardiovascular disease compared with the matched individuals, particularly within the first year of cardiovascular disease diagnosis. Those with cerebrovascular disease were found to have the greatest risks.

The findings indicated that timely assessment and psychological interventions may be necessary in this patient population.
