Does BMI impact atopic dermatitis risk?

A normal or higher body mass index may be associated with an increased risk of developing atopic dermatitis, according to a study published in PLOS ONE.

Investigators used data from the 2019-21 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey to examine the link between BMI and atopic dermatitis among slightly more than 144,000 Korean patients aged 12 to 18 years.

Compared with those who were underweight, the patients with a normal weight and those who were overweight had a higher likelihood of developing atopic dermatitis. Additionally, the patients who had less physical activity, shorter sleep durations, higher subjective stress and greater consumption of soda, sweetened beverages and fast food had a higher incidence of atopic dermatitis.
