Does diabetes raise the risk of hearing loss?
Type 2 diabetes could be linked to sudden hearing loss.
In a study published in Medicine, investigators used data from genome-wide association studies to examine the correlation between Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidemia and obesity and the risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss.
The investigators uncovered a potential causal association between Type 2 diabetes and sudden sensorineural hearing loss — which remained following adjustment for hyperlipidemia and obesity — but no such association for Type 1 diabetes, hyperlipidemia or obesity.
The findings suggested that Type 2 diabetes may be a risk factor for this type of sudden hearing loss.
