Does fasting affect cognitive function?
A study examined cognitive function during periods of fasting.
In the study, published in Psychological Bulletin, investigators used more than 70 experimental studies focused on cognitive performance among nearly 3,500 individuals who participated in or abstained from fasting. The median fasting period was about 12 hours.
Although the investigators found that there were no statistically significant differences in cognitive performance between those who did and didn’t fast for short periods of time, there were modest differences in cognitive function observed during longer fasting periods and among younger individuals.
The findings demonstrated the stability of cognitive performance during short-term fasting. However, the investigators suggested that some participants should consider the risks before deciding to partake in fasting.
