Drinking coffee may help you avoid Type 2 diabetes

A group of phytoestrogens known as lignans, found in coffee, flaxseeds and whole grains, may lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

In a study, published in JAMA Network Open, investigators assessed the relationship between lignan intake and Type 2 diabetes incidence among more than 201,000 U.S. participants who consumed secoisolariciresinol, pinoresinol, matairesinol and lariciresinol.

During the follow-up period, the investigators identified more than 20,000 new cases of Type 2 diabetes. The participants who consumed secoisolariciresinol, pinoresinol and matairesinol were found to have a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes — especially those who were obese and postmenopausal women. Total lignan intake, except for lariciresinol, had an inverse association with Type 2 diabetes risk.

The findings demonstrated the significance of incorporating lignan-rich foods into the diet for Type 2 diabetes prevention.
