Education Department launches early FAFSA beta test ahead of schedule

...

The U.S. Department of Education is releasing the 2026-27 Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, earlier than usual through a beta testing phase, aiming to improve the application process and reduce technical issues seen in previous years.

The FAFSA is the primary tool students use to access federal financial aid for college, including grants, loans and work-study opportunities. While the form is typically made available in early October, a limited group of students can already access it as part of the initial beta test. Starting Sept. 1, more students will have the option to request access to the second phase of testing. The full launch for all students remains scheduled for early October, the department said.

The early rollout is intended to give the Department of Education time to identify and fix bugs, using feedback from students and financial aid professionals. Past versions of the form have faced delays and glitches, including the 2024-25 FAFSA, which was released months late and led to widespread confusion.

“[Beta testing] allows us to test the form before we make it available to everyone. We’re using this time to monitor a limited number of FAFSA submissions to ensure our systems are performing as expected. This is a common practice in website and software development,” the department said.
