Effect of COVID-19 vaccination on mental health

Investigators have examined whether COVID-19 vaccination can help mitigate the risks of adverse mental health outcomes in patients with or without infections.

In a study published in JAMA Psychiatry, the investigators used January 2020 to December 2021 electronic health records to analyze the data of 18.6 million individuals. They then grouped them into three cohorts based on vaccine availability and vaccination status: prevaccine availability, vaccinated and unvaccinated.

The investigators discovered a higher incidence of mental health issues within one to four weeks after a COVID-19 diagnosis compared with prior to and without COVID-19 infections. The patients who had received COVID-19 vaccines were less likely to experience mental health issues than those who hadn’t received COVID-19 vaccines.

The findings revealed the potential mental health benefits of COVID-19 vaccination, particularly among those who may be at higher risk of COVID-19 infection or adverse outcomes following infection.
