Enhancing post-tonsillectomy recovery

...

Platelet-rich plasma could be effective in improving postoperative pain and wound healing in tonsillectomy.

In a study published in the American Journal of Otolaryngology, researchers randomly assigned 200 patients undergoing bilateral tonsillectomy to receive either the topical application of autologous platelet-rich plasma to the tonsillar fossae or standard care.

Compared with those who received standard care, the patients who received the platelet-rich plasma experienced lower pain in the 10 days following treatment; greater wound healing on days 7, 10 and 14; and more frequent complete mucosal healing by Day 14. The researchers reported no serious adverse events and no statistically significant differences in post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage rates between the two groups.

The results of the study highlighted the potential use of topical autologous platelet-rich plasma as an adjunct therapy during the post-tonsillectomy recovery period.
