Establishing core outcome set for endodontic treatments
The American Association of Endodontists and the Foundation for Endodontics have announced the publication of an international study establishing a core outcome set for endodontic care. Published in the Journal of Endodontics, the multi-phase project marks a major advancement in standardizing outcome measures across a range of procedures, including nonsurgical and surgical root canal treatments, vital pulp therapy, apexification and regenerative endodontics.
Developed through global collaboration involving experts from the U.S., Canada and the U.K., the core outcome set aims to standardize outcome measures in endodontic research and clinical practice. It defines key clinical outcomes such as tooth survival, pain, infection, radiographic healing, treatment success, functionality, need for further intervention and root development. Tailored sets were also created for specific treatment modalities.
“With this initiative, we are redefining how success is measured in endodontic care,” said Ashraf Fouad, D.D.S., lead editorial author of the study and chair of the ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs. It’s a significant step toward aligning clinical outcomes with patient expectations and the highest standards of evidence-based care.”
