Executive orders in several states protect access to COVID-19 vaccines

...

An executive directive from New Jersey’s Department of Health has joined an alliance of states expanding access to COVID-19 vaccines to individuals aged 6 months and older as respiratory virus season approaches.

The state directives came after federal guidance restricting access to updated COVID-19 vaccines to individuals aged 65 years and older and those with underlying conditions; the move has been criticized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The federal restrictions will require many patients to obtain prescriptions to receive COVID-19 vaccines, regardless of whether they meet the criteria outlined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

New Jersey’s public health officials responded to shifting attitudes toward COVID-19 prevention by noting that the changes at the federal level fail to follow typical scientific review processes and spread misinformation that divergences from previous COVID-19 vaccination recommendations. The state joined New York and Minnesota in issuing orders designed to ensure ongoing access to preventive health care. Other states have formed coalitions to develop evidence-based vaccination guidelines.
