Expert consensus: Strategies in endo-periodontal lesion diagnosis and management

An expert consensus group has provided recommendations for treating endo-periodontal lesions.

In the consensus report, published in the International Journal of Oral Science, investigators examined recent studies focusing on the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of endo-periodontal lesions.

The investigators suggested that these lesions often have complex etiologies and pathogenic mechanisms, present with unique anatomical and microbiological characteristics, and require multidisciplinary therapy that integrates both endodontic and periodontal treatments — leading to challenges in determining the prognosis of affected teeth. However, a timely diagnosis and early identification of the underlying causes of endo-periodontal lesions may be critical to improving outcomes in this patient population.

The investigators hope their consensus findings can facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, establish a better understanding of endo-periodontal lesion management and help clinicians select the most effective treatment options to prolong the lifespan of affected teeth.
