Experts expose legitimacy of facial-fitness gum

Experts have examined whether a chewing gum known as facial-fitness gum can improve the appearance of the jawline and tone and tighten muscles in the face and neck — as its manufacturers claim.

Some experts have attributed the growing demand for products and practices that enhance the appearance, such as mewing and jaw trainers, as well as newer beauty standards among teenagers to social media platforms like TikTok. Facial-fitness gum has consequently grown in popularity among this demographic.

Because facial-fitness gum is more difficult to chew than regular gum, the manufacturers have likened the gum to a facial workout. However, the experts expressed doubt the gum will sharpen the jawline as promised. Instead, chewing tougher gum may strengthen the masseter muscles, leading to a squarer or wider face shape without improving the undersurface of the jawline.

Although chewing gum does not often cause issues in the jaw, chewing excessively can lead to inflammation and jaw pain. Further, some of the facial-fitness gum varieties may contain caffeine and vitamin B5, which can be a laxative in higher doses.
