Experts weigh in on teeth whitening

Experts detailed the teeth-whitening strategies and safety tips for individuals who desire to brighten their smiles, according to a report from the Cleveland Clinic.

They explained that teeth-whitening products, such as hydrogen or carbamide peroxide, work by disrupting the chemical bonds of darker-colored compounds called chromogens at a molecular level.

The experts noted that at-home whitening products, such as gel-filled trays and whitening strips, may be effective at lightening the teeth after regular use for several weeks; however, professional whitening treatments contain higher concentrations of whitening chemicals and can whiten the teeth more quickly and with fewer applications.

Whitening toothpastes and rinses may also be effective but often require longer-term use to see results.

Although teeth whitening is typically deemed safe when performed by a licensed professional or when using at-home products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, some patients who undergo the procedures may experience temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. Further, aggressive bleaching can lead to tooth erosion and alterations in tooth microstructure. The chemicals may also react with ceramic crowns, sealants and dental restorations.

The experts recommended that individuals thinking about using teeth-whitening products should speak with their dentists to help them develop a treatment plan or address dental issues.
