Extra five-minute daily exercise routine could help reduce blood pressure

Investigators examined whether a small amount of additional exercise per day may improve blood pressure.

In a study published in Circulation, the investigators examined the outcomes of nearly 15,000 participants across five countries.

The investigators found that allotting just five extra minutes more than usual of physical activity — including running, cycling or climbing stairs — was effective at reducing both systolic and diastolic blood pressures. However, for more substantial decreases in systolic and diastolic blood pressures, participants needed to achieve 20 to 27 minutes and 10 to 15 minutes of exercise per day, respectively.

Despite the positive findings, further studies with more diverse patient populations may be needed to better understand the benefits of small amounts of daily exercise.
