FDA addressing metals found in feminine products

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it has launched an independent literature review and internal bench laboratory study to examine the safety of tampons after researchers discovered levels of metals in the products.

The FDA noted that prior to the sale of tampons, manufacturers are required to perform biocompatibility testing throughout the manufacturing process. The agency then reviews the testing before authorizing their readiness for the U.S. market.

With its comprehensive review, the FDA hopes to better understand the potential risks of metal exposure through the use of tampons. The agency expects to communicate the findings of its review and study when the results are available.
