FDA aims to limit misuse during opioid crisis

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has released draft guidance to expand nonopioid alternatives in pain management among patients with chronic pain.

In the new recommendations, the FDA called for establishing indications for broader categories of chronic pain conditions, initiating clinical trials designed to gather robust safety and efficacy data on treatment alternatives, exploring the mechanisms through which nonopioids can minimize the reliance on opioids and supporting drug development initiatives. The guidance was also designed to curb opioid misuse.

The FDA is currently working to address the opioid crisis through updated safety labeling, better regulating the importation and sale of illegal opioids and aiding in the development of nonopioid alternatives.
