FDA announces hand sanitizer recall over methanol risk

The Food and Drug Administration announced a recall of 40 lots of Aruba Aloe Hand Sanitizer Gel Alcohol 80% and Aruba Aloe Alcoholada Gel, both of which pose a risk of methanol exposure.

The products were found to contain alcohol denatured with methanol, a chemical that can result in nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, coma, seizures, permanent blindness or damage to the central nervous system, and even death.

Products were distributed between May 1, 2021, and Oct. 27, 2023, and sold in the U.S. online via the Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. website. Aruba Aloe Balm N.V. has not received any reports of adverse events related to the products so far, according to the FDA.
