FDA testing reveals proportion of acne products containing high levels of benzene

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed the findings from its testing of the benzene content of acne products.
Third-party laboratory testing initially raised concerns regarding benzoyl peroxide-containing acne products, which determined that high levels of the carcinogen benzene were found in a high number of the products, according to a report from the agency.
After receiving the results of the third-party testing, the FDA initiated independent testing, in which researchers examined benzene contamination among 95 acne products containing benzoyl peroxide.
The researchers discovered that more than 90% of the tested products exhibited benzene at undetectable or extremely low levels. The manufacturers of the remaining six acne products that tested for elevated levels of benzene agreed to recall them at the retail level. The FDA noted warned against the use of unvalidated testing methods, which may have skewed the results and identified a greater number of high-risk products during third-party laboratory testing.
Although the products are being removed from store shelves and online marketplaces, individuals were not informed to dispose of their acne treatments because of the minimal risk of developing cancer following exposure.
