FDA warns topical pain relief products could lead to seizures

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning for customers to avoid six over-the-counter topical pain relief products due to potential dangerous health effects.

The products, which are marketed to relieve pain before, during or after certain cosmetic procedures like tattooing and piercing, are in violation of federal law, according to the FDA. The six products are from TKTX Company, SeeNext Venture, Tattoo Numbing Cream Co., Sky Bank Media, Dermal Source and Indelicare.

"When these products that contain high concentrations of lidocaine intended to be used before or during certain cosmetic procedures are applied in ways that could lead to increased absorption of the drug product through the skin, it may lead to serious injury such as irregular heartbeat, seizures and breathing difficulties," the FDA said.
