Federal government extends health insurance to certain illegal immigrants
The Biden administration approved the offering of federally run health insurance to certain immigrants illegally brought to the U.S. as children, the White House said.
Because of the decision, about 100,000 previously uninsured participants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — DACA — are expected to enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace and the Basic Health Program, both created under the Affordable Care Act. Previously, DACA recipients were not allowed to enroll in what is colloquially known as Obamacare.
