Few long COVID cases may show symptom resolution

...

Long COVID cases may persist longer than two years.

In a study published in The Lancet Regional Health-Americas, investigators used data from the INSPIRE cohort to examine the outcomes of 3,663 adult patients who experienced COVID-19 infections between December 2020 and August 2022.

The investigators found that 27.1% of the patients with long COVID continued to experience physical and mental health issues compared with those who didn’t develop long COVID, while just 1.8% of them reported no symptoms. Those with unresolved symptoms also reported higher rates of dyspnea, moderate-to-high stress and loneliness as well as moderate-to-severe fatigue. Further, the patients who received COVID-19 vaccines prior to the onset of long COVID experienced greater physical and mental health scores compared with those who didn’t receive prior vaccination.

The investigators hope their findings can help identify novel interventions and treatment options in patients with long COVID.
