Finding down payment assistance programs

Looking to purchase a home? While this endeavor comes with many costs, from home inspection fees to the initial deposit, among the biggest is the down payment. 

But there is hope. In the U.S., more than 2,000 programs provide down payment assistance at the state, regional and local levels. Most down payment assistant programs are exclusively for first-time home buyers, while about 40% are geared toward other groups like veterans. 

Because every program is different, it's best to research programs in your state, county and city and reach out to providers with questions. The U.S. Department of Housing and Development and the Federal Housing Administration have online resources to help search programs by location.
