Florida town to decide on water fluoridation
Lakeland, Florida, is facing mounting pressure to reverse community water fluoridation after a neighboring city discontinued the practice in November 2024.
Lakeland has added supplemental fluoride to its drinking water since 1981, according to a news article published in The Ledger. The pressure comes after Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo likened community water fluoridation to public health malpractice and recent studies have indicated the apparent adverse effects of exposure to fluoride. However, the studies have not drawn definitive causal conclusions regarding fluoride’s safety. Instead, they have called for further research examining the health effects of fluoride.
In response to the arguments made in opposition of community water fluoridation, Lakeland officials have called on more members of the community, including dentists and clinicians, to provide their input on the benefits or detriments of the practice prior to making a decision.
