Fluoridated water divides communities across the country
From coast to coast, municipalities have been under assault from anti-fluoridation activists, despite science and studies that have repeatedly shown the optimal amount of the mineral can keep tooth decay at bay while advancing health equity.
Once-empty council meetings swell with advocates on both sides of the issue when fluoridation is on the agenda. The ADA, the American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics, all recommend fluoridated water for their patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called fluoridation one of the top 10 health achievements of the 20th century.
While those opposed to fluoride in water supplies argue the mineral can be bought in over-the-counter products, the CDC has said the greatest protection from tooth decay comes when store-bought products are used in combination with water fluoridation, providing an additional 25% reduction in cavities.
