Focusing on men’s mental health beyond June

...

Although Men’s Health Month ends with June, experts are urging men to continue to focus on their mental health throughout the year.

Men often face stigmatization around opening up or seeking help for mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, according to a news article from WI Proud. For instance, data indicates that compared with women, men may be less likely to receive treatment for mental health issues and have a greater risk of suicide, one of the leading causes of mortality in the United States.

The experts suggested that awareness and efforts at connection — including reaching out or starting a conversation — can help support men with mental health issues. However, loved ones should watch for signs of deteriorating mental health, including mood changes, irritability, sleep issues and social withdrawal, which can be addressed with support from friends, family members or mental health professionals.

While Men’s Health Month strives to increase awareness centered around men’s mental health, men should continue to access mental health resources and individuals should continue to check in on the men in their lives throughout the year.
