Fourth case of avian flu identified in United States
A case of H5 influenza, or the avian flu, has been reported in Colorado, according to a report from CBS News.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment revealed that the patient was working directly with cattle on a dairy farm when he developed conjunctivitis and subsequently tested positive for the virus. He was treated with oseltamivir and has reportedly recovered.
Although the infection marks the fourth case of avian flu within humans since the outbreak began in March, the agency noted that the public risk may be low because the avian flu virus has not adapted to spread between humans. Americans who work on farms — especially those who work directly with livestock — were advised to take precautions to avoid contracting the infection, such as avoiding contact with sick or dead animals; wearing protective respirators, eye protection and gloves and thoroughly washing hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
Officials are deliberating on whether and when to roll out nearly 5 million doses of the avian flu vaccine or utilize more antivirals among farm workers most at risk.
