Frozen shrimp recalled after possible radioactive contamination

...

As of Aug. 21, two seafood companies have recalled their frozen shrimp products due to a potential radioactive contamination.

California-based Southwind Foods recalled a “limited quantity” of its frozen shrimp after it was possibly exposed to Cesium-137, a metal used for medical devices and gauges.

The recalled products were distributed July 17-Aug. 8 to retailers, distributors and wholesalers in Alabama, Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia and Washington. Brands included in the recall are Sand Bar, Best Yet, Arctic Shores Seafood Company, Great American Seafood Imports Co. and First Street.

This most recent recall came just days after PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati of Indonesia, also known as BMS Food, recalled its frozen shrimp products because of similar contamination concerns.

Some of the products processed by the Indonesian company are sold at Walmart stores in 13 states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia. The products include Walmart’s Great Value brand frozen shrimp.
