Global measles outbreak sees ‘alarming’ increase

The number of measles cases is increasing around the world, with experts saying the dramatic uptick is staggering. The World Health Organization said that its European region saw an ‘alarming’ increase in measles cases, from under 1,000 in 2022 to more than 30,000 in 2023. 

The WHO added that measles cases increased worldwide by 18% to about 9 million, and deaths rose 43% to 136,000, in 2022 compared to 2021. Measles is one of the most contagious infectious diseases but also one of the most preventable with vaccines.
