Government has backlog of student loan applications

...

The U.S. Department of Education is facing a major backlog of federal student loan applications, including more than 1 million pending income-driven repayment applications and over 74,000 Public Service Loan Forgiveness applications. Some borrowers have been waiting six months or longer for decisions.

The backlog stems from pauses and system updates under both the Trump and Biden administrations, as well as ongoing legal challenges to programs like the SAVE plan. The slow processing has drawn criticism from borrowers, financial experts, and the American Federation of Teachers, who argue it denies borrowers their statutory rights to affordable repayment and forgiveness.

Even though more than 300,000 IDR applications were processed in August, at the current pace it could take over a year to clear the backlog. Officials cite legal and administrative complications, while borrowers emphasize that delays are leaving them vulnerable despite having followed the rules.
