Hazards of unlicensed tooth whitening
Dental professionals have addressed the potential risks of tooth whitening conducted by unlicensed individuals. The regulation of teeth-whitening services varies from state to state. In a statement to HuffPost reporters, the ADA urged “the public to be cautious of services that eliminate the role of the dentist and [recommended] that [patients] consult with a licensed dentist when considering a tooth-bleaching product.”
Following procedures performed by unlicensed individuals, patients may experience gingival damage, heightened tooth sensitivity, tooth-root surface irritation, infections and other complications. Unregulated tooth-whitening materials may also cause damage to the teeth.
Dental professionals indicated that all patients who want to undergo tooth whitening should visit a licensed clinician in a dental office and understand the potential risks and benefits of the procedure.
