Health care workers face high student-debt-to-income ratios
Health care professionals are facing staggering levels of student loan debt and having to reset their financial priorities, according to a poll from Laurel Road.
Nurses reported an average pretax income of $80,695 and average student loan debt of $40,611, while doctors reported earning an average of $323,693 before taxes while shouldering an average debt of $188,317. Early-career doctors said their student loan debt equaled as much as 64% of their average annual salary.
About 75% of doctors and 69% of nurses said they “always” or “often” feel anxious because of their student loan debt. Most health care workers reported they have needed to cut back in other areas of spending, including travel, dining and retirement.
