HIV-positive kidney, liver transplants now permitted in new rule

A new rule may reduce wait times for liver and kidney transplants.

As part of the HOPE Act, the rule will permit individuals with human immunodeficiency virus to donate livers and kidneys to patients who are HIV-positive, according to a news article from The Associated Press.

The rule comes following positive results from a trial involving nearly 200 kidney transplant recipients. Compared with the transplant recipients who received kidneys from donors who were HIV-negative, those who received the organs from donors who were HIV-positive demonstrated similar rates of overall survival and organ rejection.

Proponents for the rule have highlighted that the expanded pool of eligible donors could remove barriers to liver and kidney transplantation and improve outcomes for a larger proportion of patients awaiting organs.
