How AI may be used in periodontics

In a report from Dimensions of Dental Hygiene, experts cited in the article discussed the future application of artificial intelligence in periodontics.

Despite some apprehension regarding the technology, AI has benefited in the field since 2017, when the first autonomous guided dental implant placement system was introduced. The experts indicated that AI has also been utilized to support administrative tasks, improve the identification and diagnosis of oral health issues from caries and oral cancer, enhance the precision of surgical interventions and allow for earlier and more effective treatment administration. In periodontics, AI could help diagnose, treat and maintain periodontal diseases.

The experts underscored that some students in postgraduate programs are now applying AI to periodontics and learning to think critically when using the technology in order to achieve positive patient outcomes.
