How borrowers can make repayments after grace period ends
Experts offered advice to student loan borrowers after the 12-month on-ramp period came to a close on Sept. 30.
The pandemic-related grace period was designed to help borrowers who missed payments by preventing them from moving toward defaulting and damaging their credit scores, according to a report from PBS News. However, because the Saving on a Valuable Education plan is on hold and the Fresh Start program also concluded on Sept. 30, many borrowers may have limited options for repayments.
The experts encouraged borrowers who may be unable to make payments to check if they qualify for an income-driven repayment plan or to apply for deferment or forbearance to pause payments.
The American Dental Association continues to advocate for student debt relief, including legislation that would lower interest rates overall and pause the accrual of interest and payments on federal student loans for dental students in residency.
