How fat storage influences cancer

Adiposity distribution could impact the risk of a dozen cancer types.

In a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, investigators examined the effects of five types of adipose tissue deposits on 12 cancers.

The investigators found that individuals with abdominal subcutaneous fat had an increased risk of endometrial cancer, hepatic cancer or esophageal carcinoma; those with visceral and liver fat had a heightened risk of hepatic cancer; those with gluteofemoral fat had a lower risk of breast cancer and meningioma and those with pancreas fat had a higher risk of ovarian cancer.

The investigators suggested that hormone and metabolic pathways could mediate the association between adipose tissue and cancer risk, signifying the importance of weight control for cancer prevention.
