How is ‘shrinkflation’ affecting your groceries?

Shoppers are noticing that their grocery products seem to be shrinking. Over the past few years, companies have been downsizing products but keeping the same prices, causing outrage among consumers.  

The trend, commonly known as “shrinkflation,” was frequent in 2016 when overall inflation was low. It became less common in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic and has recently begun returning to prepandemic levels.  

Although downsizing is less common than it was in 2016, the magnitude for some products is more extreme now — especially in categories like sweets, detergent and toilet paper.
