How sleep duration impacts aging

Sleep habits may impact aging.

In a study published in BMC Public Health, investigators examined the aging outcomes of 3,306 participants aged 60 years and older.

The investigators identified five distinct sleep trajectories and their relationships with healthy aging — which was defined as the absence of major chronic diseases, maintained physical function, high cognitive performance, good mental health and active social engagement. Among the sleep trajectories were normal stable, long stable, short stable, decreasing and increasing sleep. Total sleep duration was assessed in 2011, 2013 and 2015. Healthy aging was assessed in 2020. The participants who achieved normal stable sleep were more likely to experience healthy aging compared with the other sleep patterns, particularly increasing and short stable sleep.

The findings emphasized the significance of monitoring changes in sleep duration among middle-aged and older individuals.
