How tariff ruling could affect businesses, consumers

...

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court ruling to block the trade tariffs, experts detailed whether businesses and consumers could see refunds.

Prior to the decision, the United States collected about $180 billion from the tariffs, according to a news article from Northwest Public Broadcasting, an NPR and PBS member station in the Pacific Northwest. The experts cited in the article explained that businesses were directly responsible for paying the additional costs. As a result, many of them raised prices and introduced surcharges to account for a portion of the losses, potentially discouraging some consumers from making their usual purchases.

Although some state governors are pushing for refunds to the consumers, the experts suggested that tariff-related refunds would go to the businesses first, and any refunds consumers would receive could be insubstantial. Additionally, because the costs brought about by tariffs were shared across the supply chain, consumers could face challenges launching class action lawsuits, tracing costs associated with tariffs and determining how much they should see in their refunds.

While the tariffs are currently still in effect, many businesses plan to monitor how the Supreme Court ruling will impact costs and refunds.
