Experts provided tips for reducing the severity of allergies as pollen season kicks off.

Although allergy seasons have worsened in recent years, certain factors could play a role in the severity of allergic reactions, according to a news article from the Associated Press. Experts cited in the article noted that based on pollen counts as well as the utilization of health care resources like allergy specialists and medications, individuals residing in Wichita, Kansas; New Orleans; Oklahoma City; Tulsa; Oklahoma and Memphis, Tennessee may experience the most severe allergies in 2025.

The experts detailed that tree, grass and weed pollens are often responsible for the majority of allergies. Individuals were advised to use pollen trackers to help decide when it’s safest to spend time outdoors. To minimize exposure to pollens, the experts suggested that people keep their windows closed, wear long sleeves, consider wearing masks as well as shower and put on a change of clothes when going back indoors.

For those who are experiencing allergic reactions, over-the-counter medications such as nasal sprays and oral allergy drugs have been shown to be effective at treating symptoms. More severe allergic reactions impacting quality of life may warrant a visit to an allergy specialist.
