How to make practical New Year’s resolutions

...

Experts provided strategies for creating manageable New Year’s resolutions.

The experts detailed that New Year’s resolutions involving healthy habits can improve individuals’ mental and physical well-being and help them get time back in the new year. However, unsustainable New Year’s resolutions often don’t survive January, according to a news article from Healthline.

The experts noted that when it comes to healthy eating in the new year, individuals should refrain from following dieting cycles that can cause the body to store more fat over time. Instead, they can consume balanced meals high in protein, fiber and healthy fats; replace sugary foods with fruits or nuts; and eat a nutritious breakfast daily. Cooking meals at home rather than eating out can also enhance the quality of the diet. Other New Year’s resolutions can involve eating more whole foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains and fish to minimize the risk of chronic diseases; cutting back on sweetened and alcoholic beverages known to adversely affect multiple organ systems; and reducing the intake of ultraprocessed foods.

Attainable goals for 2026 can include getting more physical activity. Individuals who haven’t been active in 2025 can start by decreasing their sedentary time and being more active by adding activities like walking or spending time outdoors to break up long periods of sitting. Instead of getting gym memberships that may not be used later in the year, individuals should choose to partake in physical activities that they find enjoyable — including walking, biking and dancing. They should then set realistic goals and avoid ambitious plans like exercising daily.

New Year’s resolutions like meditating, being more mindful and present, speaking more positively about themselves, limiting screen time, taking more time for self-care, sleeping at least seven hours per night, committing to a new hobby and taking a vacation can help individuals boost their psychological health, minimize stress levels and feel more energized.

Finally, the experts recommended that individuals make oral health one of their New Year’s resolutions. By practicing beneficial oral hygiene habits, individuals can prevent oral health issues and even reduce the risk of other health conditions.
