How to recover from identity theft
With the Federal Trade Commission receiving more than 1.1 million reports of identity theft in 2022, it’s important to know how you can protect yourself, take control if it happens to you and prevent it from happening again.
The most common types of identity theft involve using the victim’s Social Security number to open new accounts, accounting for 37% of reported cases. Other forms of identity theft ,such as synthetic identity theft or child identity theft, are harder to detect.
Victims of identity theft should file a report with the FTC and their local police department, place a fraud alert and freeze on their credit reports, contact the institutions where the fraud occurred, dispute unauthorized activity with credit bureaus and secure online accounts. They should also immediately change their passwords and monitor accounts for suspicious activity.
