How US Department of Education cuts could affect student loans, FAFSA

Experts are accessing the current status and potential impact of recent reductions at the U.S. Department of Education.
According to a news report from USA Today, the agency’s main functions will continue to be protected because of laws passed by Congress. For instance, the experts cited in the article detailed that legislation currently requires the federal government to provide student loan programs, grants and safeguards against discrimination. However, recent downsizing may impact its ability to carry out its obligations. If the department were to close, these services would have to be administered elsewhere within the federal government.
Additionally, because the Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a legal requirement for students, the form will continue to be available. The experts did note that possible changes to the department could delay disbursement of student aid. Similarly, the government is expected to continue overseeing federal student loans.
Finally, accommodations for students with disability will not be disrupted, but delays in handling disability-related complaints filed under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act have been reported.
