Human metapneumovirus cases up this winter

While influenza, norovirus and respiratory syncytial virus have all surged across the United States, cases of human metapneumovirus have risen in northern China as well as in some parts of the United States.

Despite the initial public alarm, health officials have informed individuals that HMPV has been around for decades and cases are typically mild, according to a news report from Forbes. Those infected with HMPV may experience cold- and flu-like symptoms that resolve within a week, but symptoms can worsen to bronchitis or pneumonia. As with other respiratory viruses, young children, older adults and those who are immunocompromised are at the greatest risk of severe infections and hospitalization.

To avoid developing HMPV, individuals should follow standard hygiene practices such as washing their hands frequently, avoiding contact with infected people or potentially contaminated surfaces and refraining from sharing utensils or drinking glasses with others.
