Identifying indicators of peri-implantitis risk
Researchers may have uncovered risk factors for peri-implantitis.
In a study published in Clinical Oral Implants Research, the researchers asked 3,083 patients who received dental implants in 2014 to complete a questionnaire, some of whom were randomly assigned to undergo full-mouth clinical and radiographic examinations.
The researchers identified a 17% and 8.6% prevalence of peri-implantitis at the patient and implant levels, respectively. The patients who reported smoking and periodontitis had an increased likelihood of experiencing peri-implantitis. Further, those who self-reported peri-implant inflammation had an increased risk of developing the condition.
Clinicians were advised to consider these risk factors when assessing patients for peri-implantitis.
