Illuminating role of mobile devices in teledentistry

...

Mobile teledentistry could help improve access to dental care, particularly among underserved patient groups.

In a study published in the Journal of Dentistry, investigators used data from the Web of Science database to identify 99 articles focused on the use of mobile teledentistry published between January 2013 and April 2025.

The articles elucidated the current research landscape across several key topics and themes — including diagnostic accuracy, accessibility of care, oral hygiene applications, traditional care comparisons, products and the feasibility and validity of mobile teledentistry.

The investigators emphasized the critical need for initiatives to support the adoption of mobile teledentistry in resource-limited settings. Further research is needed to determine whether this type of care can provide accurate dental diagnoses and reduce disparities in dental care, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
